Buyer Inspection Standards Training

This training programme goes beyond simply making garments well. It is designed to ensure a clear understanding of the mandatory quality specifications and production standards required by global retailers and fashion brands. It sets out domestic and international buyer inspection requirements in a structured way, enabling working inspectors to apply accurate and consistent judgement standards.

Why Buyer Standards Matter

Claim Prevention

Failure to meet buyer standards can lead to full shipment returns, sales bans and other costly losses. Clear standards help prevent such risks before products reach the market.

Building Trust

Factories that fully comply with buyer standards are better positioned to maintain long-term partnerships and move towards preferred factory status.

Global Competitiveness

Passing the strict standards of global brands is itself a mark of manufacturing capability and technical reliability.

Key Components of the Training

1. Quality Control Standards

  • AQL, Acceptable Quality Level: statistical sampling standards and the maximum permitted defect rate
  • Physical test reports: test results above specified levels for shrinkage, colour fastness, pilling and related items
  • Defect classification: rules defining what should be treated as critical, major or minor defects

2. Technical and Manufacturing Standards

  • Tech Pack: design sketches, bill of materials, BOM, and seam allowance or construction instructions
  • POM, Point of Measure: precise measurement points and tolerance requirements
  • Sewing standards: stitches per inch, SPI, thread type and requirements for specialised machinery

3. Regulatory and Safety Standards

  • RSL, Restricted Substances List: control of restricted hazardous chemicals
  • Physical safety: pull-test requirements for buttons and needle detection for metal contamination
  • Consumer protection: compliance with legal safety rules, including cord-length requirements for children’s clothing

4. Social Responsibility and Compliance

  • Factory Audit: assessment of labour conditions, human rights, fire safety and environmental protection facilities
  • Global certification requirements: verification of certifications such as WRAP, BSCI and the Higg Index
  • Supply-chain transparency: data management standards covering the process from raw materials to finished goods

Recent Trends Among Domestic Buyers

The inspection standards of domestic buyers, including major fashion groups, home-shopping companies and online platforms, broadly follow global buyer requirements. However, they are also highly specialised around Korean adult and children’s body measurements and the legal framework for the Korea Certification, KC, mark.

1. Mandatory Legal Requirement: KC Certification All textile products sold in Korea must carry the KC mark.
  • Household textile products: test reports showing that hazardous substances such as formaldehyde and azo dyes are below permitted limits are required for apparel, bedding and related products
  • Children’s textile products: products for children aged 13 or younger are subject to strict safety requirements, including limits on lead and plasticisers
  • Labelling requirements: fibre composition, country of manufacture and care instructions must be accurately written in Korean
2. Korean Performance Guidelines These standards reflect Korea’s high frequency of washing-machine use and the need to minimise post-sale complaints.
  • Washing fastness and dimensional change: buyers often require washing fastness of Grade 4 or above and shrinkage within ±3%
  • Pilling and rubbing fastness: knitwear and coats are often required to meet Grade 3-4 or higher to reduce consumer complaints
  • Migration prevention: strong colour-block designs may require special testing to prevent colour bleeding during washing
3. Fit and Sizing System Domestic buyers often use their own sizing specifications based on Korean body data, including Size Korea.
  • Standard body specifications: tech packs are designed around Korean body measurements, including sleeve length and shoulder width
  • Fit sample approval: silhouettes, comfort and ease of movement are checked through model fitting before production
  • Dimensional tolerance: for woven products, major measurement points are often required to stay within a precise tolerance of around ±1 cm
4. Platform-specific Inspection Requirements Inspection priorities differ by distribution channel, including department stores, home shopping and online platforms.
  • Department stores and major brands: focus on accurate composition of premium materials and high-grade finishing, including thread trimming and seam allowances
  • Home-shopping buyers: require needle-detection records, packaging durability and consistency between broadcast samples and mass-produced goods
  • Online platforms, including Musinsa-type channels: require KC certification and reports confirming that hazardous substances are not detected, in addition to design compliance

Recent Trends Among Global Buyers (Update 2026)

European Market: Sustainability and Transparency

Digital Product Passport, DPP

Buyers are increasingly requiring product data that tracks the lifecycle from production to recycling through QR-code based systems.

Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, CSDDD

Controls across the full supply chain are being strengthened, including reviews of labour conditions and environmental protection.

US Market: Safety and Fair Trade

Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, UFLPA

Stronger origin traceability is required for raw materials and production sources.

PFAS-free Chemical Regulation

Restrictions are expanding on the use of PFAS substances, particularly in water-repellent finishing.
