Feather and Down Testing

This is a precision testing process used to assess the quality, thermal performance and hygiene of filling materials used in padded garments and bedding.
In accordance with International Down and Feather Bureau, IDFB, and KS standards, it verifies the value and reliability of natural filling materials.

1. Key Test Items

Feather and down can vary significantly in quality depending on origin and processing conditions, making detailed step-by-step assessment essential.

01

Composition Testing

This test confirms the percentage ratio of down clusters and feathers. A higher down content generally provides better insulation, and the test verifies whether the labelled composition ratio is being met.

02

Fill Power Testing

This test measures the volume, or recovery power, of feather and down as it traps air. It is the key indicator used to determine thermal performance. The higher the value, the lighter and warmer the product is likely to be.

03

Cleanliness and Hygiene Testing

Turbidity, oxygen number and oil-and-fat content are measured to confirm whether animal-derived residues remain. This is a safety-focused assessment of hygiene and processing quality.

04

Black Point Testing

For white goose or duck products, this test strictly measures the amount of dark-coloured feather material that may affect the product’s visual appearance.

2. Summary of Key Feather and Down Testing Standards

Internationally, strict standards such as those of the International Down and Feather Bureau, IDFB, and KS K 2620 are commonly applied.

Item Key Indicator Example Quality Standard
Composition Down content Within the permitted tolerance against the labelled value
Recovery Power Fill Power 800 FP or above, premium grade
Hygiene Turbidity 1,000 mm or above, very clean
Safety Oxygen Number 4.8 mg/100 g or below

3. Key Testing Equipment

Accurate data is produced using precision equipment managed in line with the guidelines of the International Down and Feather Bureau, IDFB.

1. Fill Power Tester

This equipment measures the recovery power, or bulkiness, of feather and down. After a load is applied inside a cylinder, the rebounding volume, measured in cubic inches, is used to assess insulation performance.

2. Turbidity Test Cylinder

This equipment checks the cleanliness of washed feather and down. The transparency of the rinsed water is measured by water height in millimetres; the clearer the water, the fewer the impurities and the better the hygiene level.

3. Composition Analysis Box

Inside a sealed box designed to prevent fibres from flying away, down, feathers and impurities are manually classified with precision to determine the exact composition ratio.

4. Moisture and Oil Content Measuring Device

This device measures the appropriate moisture level required to prevent fibre damage, as well as the natural oil-and-fat content that may contribute to odour if not properly controlled.

Detailed testing procedures can be provided according to brand delivery standards, including KS K 2620 and related requirements.
